Please, Puppy, Please by Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee and Illustrated by Kadir Nelson

“Please, Puppy, Please” tells the story of two small siblings and their challenges taking care of their energetic puppy. Despite their pleas for the puppy to behave, the puppy ends up finding an open gate to run through, rolling in the mud, splattering bath bubbles everywhere and giving the kids a good run to catch up.

Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee mastered the rhythm and repetitiveness of the perfectly selected, simple words. It is a fun story to read out loud and kids can learn to read along with it from memory.

The delightful words are equally matched with Kadir Nelson’s amazing illustrations. He has such a talent for painting the picture that makes you love all of the characters and have a happy sense of nostalgia for the scenery.

I could say that this book is about the importance of going with the flow and allowing people (and puppies) to be themselves. Or I could say this book is about the amazing ability for small children to rise to the occasion of responsibility, when it is an effort that is dear to their hearts. Or I could simply say this book is a sweet snapshot of another wonderful summer childhood day. However you look at it, it is a brilliant feel good time.
